The Skills You Need to Graduate With a Job

Human head with gearsThink graduating top of your class will land you a job? Think again. Recent studies show more employers are looking for graduates with critical thinking and problem solving skills, and those that can write well and aren’t afraid to step outside the box to find solutions.

I recently attended a conference where Tony Wagner spoke on this subject. Mr Wagner is the first Innovation Education Fellow at the Technology & Entrepreneurship Center at Harvard. He stressed the following key skills that students need to be successful and employable.

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving
  • Collaboration across networks and leading by influence
  • Agility and adaptability
  • Initiative and entrepreneurialism
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Accessing and analyzing information
  • Curiosity and imagination

Educational Technology and Mobile Learning recently posted an article with a video link to Tony Wagner’s presentation. I highly encourage you to watch it!
